However, it's not always so cut-and-dry. Sure, my favorite type of music is rare northern soul, but that doesn't mean I don't like Stereolab. They, on the other hand, help preserve 60s sounds that weren't originally popular in the mod scene, but are now and integral part of the record collection of any "purist" mod. Hammond-driven soul jazz wouldn't have resurfaced after disappearing in the 70s if it weren't for the acid jazz scene; and Bossa Nova would still be relegated to the cheesy lounge scene if it weren't for the electronic bands that have flourished throughout Europe and Japan for the past 15 years. This site proves, if nothing else, that the "modern mods" can design a great looking webpage--even if the content is terrible. -------- DATE: 19.7.00 04:44 p.m. TITLE: untitled ----- BODY: untitled Here is a really long list of completely uncategorized links from spyonit.com. This is probably some administration page--not meant to be viewed by the general public (that said, it will probably be taken down really soon), but if you're in the mood for links, this is the place to go. -------- DATE: 27.4.00 01:29 p.m. TITLE: Ikari Gendou ----- BODY: Ikari Gendou Yet another person who looks a lot like me (okay, so he's not really a "person"). If anyone can tell me ifthere's a name for beards without mustaches, I'd love to know it--I could start a secret society, with the Amish as our foot soldiers. -------- DATE: 26.4.2000 01:50 p.m. TITLE: Jack Diamond Music ----- BODY: Jack Diamond Music I saw a link to the Spaced Out / Genuine Electric Latin Love Machine "compilation" (it's just two unrelated LPs on one CD) on Andrew's pita (for some reason, he seems to have removed the link), and he found it through misterpants. No, I'm not resorting to meta-meta-meta-content simply because I haven't updated in months, I'm just linking to one of the best online record shops I've ever seen.
I know that Andrew and Mr. Pants probably linked to this CD for it's kitschiness, but I see a must-have CD full of weird electric/moog covers of some of my favorite Bossa Nova classics (although I doubt either of these gentlemen share my soft spot for "Girl from Ipanema" or "Peanut Vendor," two STANDARDS in the Latin jazz scene). Intrigued, I looked to see what else Jack Diamond has for sale. Highlights include The Revenge of Mister Mopoji by the Soul Providers, and Psychodelic Sounds by Jr. and His Soulettes, and while I already own the latter, it stands as a testament to the coolness of this site. -------- DATE: TITLE: Home Sweet Home ----- BODY: Home Sweet Home Here's an aerial photograph of my apartment building, courtesy of Microsoft TerraServer (yeah, I know). My building it all the way in the upper right-hand corner, it's the northernmost one.
Just east of us is Evergreen Park, where I take my two-year-old son to play (weather permitting). That lake next-door to us is the Carbondale Reservoir, which supplies the city's water. You can even scroll north a couple kilometers and see my university (and another lake!); or you can just be jealous because, no matter how much bigger your apartment is than mine, you don't live a few meters from a lake. (Thanks for Kidsparrow for introducing me to this creepy, yet cool, Microsoft service). -------- DATE: TITLE: Tim Little Shoes ----- BODY: Tim Little Shoes Relatively inexpensive handmade shoes from this English shoemaker. When I say inexpensive, however, I'm talking about the fact that his bespoke shoes cost only £850 (,360.68, at the time of this writing) as opposed to £1400 (,241.12). His normal shoes aren't quite as unobtainable, ranging from £150 to £200.
My favorite models include the "Stormy Monday" Chukka Boot and the "Sidewinder" Chelsea Boot. Of course, I always feel ovo-lacto vegetarian guilt when I read words like "Calf Leather." -------- DATE: TITLE: The Vinyl Killer ----- BODY: The Vinyl Killer If I had to waste, I'd buy this and spend all my free time at thrift shops, tearing up every copy of "Whipped Cream And Other Delights" I could find. "Vinyl Killer might be a good name, though, because it's not kind to your records -- it probably tracks at about 10 grams, which is a lot more tracking force than a properly set-up turntable would use." You think? -------- DATE: TITLE: Ford O21C vs. Fiat ESV ----- BODY: Ford O21C vs. Fiat ESV After drooling over pictures of Ford's O21C concept car in the November issue of Wallpaper*, I had a good laugh when I found this. In an interview that accompanied the damp pictures, trendy designer Marc Newson, whose design for the O21C marks his first venture into automotive design, didn't even mention the ESV when asked which were his favourite cars from the 70s and 80s!
Gary Player said it best: "I think Marky Mark got himself in too deep when he realized that designing a car wasn't the same as a coffee table, and he got desperate the night before his book report was due." -------- DATE: TITLE: No Space Sex? ----- BODY: No Space Sex? "The representatives of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration...might be among the few [people] who don't like to think about sex..." And to think, I actually wanted a job there! -------- DATE: TITLE: White Dot ----- BODY: White Dot Here is the webpage for an organization based in the UK and USA, which is out to fight the evil influence of television. No, we're not talking about those silly folk who blame television on the evils of society; they believe (and I agree with them) that television is slowly sapping away the life of its viewers. Although they're unlikely to win many converts with lines like this:
This is like a science fiction horror story; but it's really happening. People have stopped living as humans and connected themselves to a machines instead. However, they also include some thought-provoking information, such as the results of a recent study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which finds that "Pediatricians should urge parents to avoid television viewing for children under the age of 2 years." I guess my two year-old son was doing himself a favor when he broke our last television a year ago. --------
